What happens when compliments on your motherly glow, the excitement of baby showers, and appreciation for push gifts are not enough? How do you manage another unsuccessful IVF/IUI treatment while your inbox is filled with baby shower invites? How do you cope with an unplanned pregnancy when you’re not mentally, emotionally, and financially prepared for a child? While pregnancy and motherhood might be joyous journeys for some women, they may trigger a sense of doom, anxiety, and depression in others. At the Women’s Wellness Center of Virginia, we use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to help clients manage symptoms associated with Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs). As it stands, 38% of BIPOC women experience PMADs, and 1 out 5 women do not seek support for maternal mental health treatment.
When it comes to treating anxiety and depression in perinatal women, there’s not a one-size fit course of action. Therefore, in addition to EMDR therapy, we offer cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, emotional freedom techniques, and tapping.
